INTRODUCTION

The Victoria Macintosh Users Group is a ‘not-for-profit’ informal group of people who meet to share solutions and ideas relating to Apple Macintosh and iOS devices. Members with different degrees of knowledge learn from and support each other. VMUG is not just a club for computer experts; it’s a learning center, an open forum for new Macintosh enthusiasts as well as computer veterans.

GENERAL MEETINGS

The best way to find out about the Victoria Macintosh Users Group is to attend one of our regular monthly meetings held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Trafalgar – Pro Patria Legion, 411 Gorge Road East. Doors open at 6:30pm, meeting begins at 7pm.

At the door you will find your name badge and a membership check-in list where you can check off your name.

You can choose from 3 types of membership: – Individual for $35/year, Family $45 and Corporate $60.

Membership renewals and new member enrollment can also be performed there (cash or cheque only please). Non-members are welcome as guests on payment of a $5 fee, which can be put towards a membership if they join at that meeting.

Inside the meeting hall, you’ll find a Library table where Apple related books/magazines can be borrowed from one meeting to the next for no charge. VMUG are always looking for donations of current, relevant Macintosh, iPad, iPhone books, so if you can help please see the Librarian.

GENERAL MEETING FORMAT

Each meeting roughly follows a format of: –

  • Mini presentation
  • Question and Answers session
  • Optional vendor presentation
  • 15 minute break where you may talk to the vendor or other experts or buy prize tickets
  • Main presentation
  • Business meeting
  • Prize draw

At every monthly meeting, there is a draw held where you have a chance to win Apple related hardware or software (e.g. hard disks, iTunes cards etc.). The tickets are $1 each or 5 for $5.

SPECIAL MEETINGS

As well as the monthly general meetings VMUG has some special meetings: –

AGM/CHRISTMAS MEETING

In December, VMUG holds its Christmas Meeting and combined Annual General Meeting, when any new Executives are voted in. The meeting is special in that there is a large prize draw when traditionally large Apple hardware such as 2 iPads are the prizes along with many donated prizes from local Apple related stores. Tickets for the Christmas prize draw are sold well before the December meeting and they can be bought at monthly meetings or online using PayPal at the VMUG web site.

SIGS

As well as monthly general meetings, VMUG also hold Special Interest Group meetings (“SIGs”) at other locations. The fees to attend the SIGs is $4 per meeting, non-members pay $5 which will be returned if VMUG is joined that evening. Your support is what allows these groups and services to continue.

NOVICE SIG

The Novice SIG is for members who have not much experience with Apple devices and demonstrates/discusses software or hardware at a basic level. It is held at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool, on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm – 9:30pm

INTERMEDIATE SIG

The Intermediate SIG is for members who have some experience with Apple hardware who want to learn a bit more. The SIG is held on the 4th Tuesday of every other month, i.e. January, March, May, July, September and November at Saanich Commonwealth Pool at 7:30pm – 9:30pm.

SIDNEY SIG

The Sidney SIG is for members who live around Sidney or who cannot get to the other SIGs in the evening. This meeting is on the 4th Thursday of each month at 10:30am at the Sidney Shoal Center on Resthaven Drive.

WEBSITE

VMUG’s website contains dates and information about the next meetings, as well as contact details of the VMUG Executive, and previous editions of the VMUG newsletter.

You may also renew your membership using PayPal—all you need is your existing membership number from your membership card and a credit card. Click HERE to go to the Membership page.

Occasionally, there may be surveys that the Executive would like members to complete or a gallery of photographs taken by members for publishing in the newsletter.

NEWSLETTER

Once a month, MacTalk the VMUG newsletter is compiled, printed and mailed out to members. It contains editorials, pictures, advertisements, reviews etc. of Apple related information. Individuals or corporations are able to advertise their products or services for a modest price – contact the Editor for further information.

After the 16th of each month, the most recent Mactalk will be posted online

Often, there are spare copies of the monthly newsletter left over after mailing and they are available to members if they are able to leave them at their place of work or other business (with their permission) to advertise VMUG so additional members can be recruited. The extra copies can be picked up at the monthly general meetings.

LISTSERV

Members who cannot attend the monthly meetings or SIGs can ask question using the VMUG ListServ. Members can join the ListServ and then email questions to the ListServ address where their email can be read by other members and commented/answered on. This technique is very popular to resolve issues members have with their equipment or software. Members who join VMUG will normally be added to the ListServ automatically.
