Showing messages on MBP and iPhone

For quite awhile now messages sent and received only appear on either my MBP or my phone, but not both as used to be the case. If a message is initiated or replied to on the computer, then replies come to it and vice versa with the phone. Previously, as stated above, both platforms would have all the messages. Is there some way to reinstate that behaviour?

It seems likely that you don't have Messages syncing turned on for BOTH devices. Check to see if that's the case.

Also, just to be sure ... I've been burned on this before ... we're talking about the built-in Apple program Messages and NOT Facebook Messenger, right?

I don't use Facebook--definitely Apple Messages. I looked before for some way to sync and found nothing. I logged into iCloud, and Messages doesn't appear, so presumably it's not done that way. So how are they synced?

On my devices I don't use iCloud syncing.

On my iPhone I go to Settings and click on my name at the top. Make sure which AppleID you are using there. Then Settings > Messages > Send & Receive where I have my iPhone's phone number shown. If I tap on that, I see a check mark beside that phone number.
Also in Settings > Messages I have Send as SMS turned on, MMS Messaging turned on as a minimum.

On my iMac I launch Messages and go to Preferences.
Under the iMessage tab, I see the same AppleID that I am using on the iPhone.
Then "enable this account: is checked.
Under "You can be reached for messages at:" I see my iPhone's phone number checked, my AppleID email address checked.

This is all for the current versions of iOS and macOS - older versions may present differently

Thanks, Dave. I got most of it working using the "Sync now" button, but what I don't have that you mentioned is this line:
"Under "You can be reached for messages at:" I see my iPhone's phone number checked, my AppleID email address checked." The phone number does not appear on my MBP preferences.
