How are you trying to delete the name? Try selecting a name in the group, then right click on it (or control=click) and from the resulting sub menu click on "Delete Card". A box should now appear with the option to "Remove from Group". Once the group is empty you should be able to just select it and hit the delete key etc.

1. Always remember that just because you are experiencing an issue does not mean everyone is.
If you've recently upgraded to Catalina or transferred your data to a machine running Catalina, it's possible you've run into a permissions mix-up. First, try restarting the machine. Second, try updating to today's bug-fix release of Catalina (10.15.2). Third, try running OnyX to see if that fixes the issue.
