Hey everyone. I am presently in Kelowna and have very bad wifi. I am having trouble loading the new show notes (show notes.ca) for tech talk with Alan Perry. (tech talk 2022 Show Notes) As I am heading to the states, can someone copy the travel section SIM card/data/roaming info to me, or offer any suggestions. ?I will be gone for 2 weeks, I will have wifi when I stay with my dad, I may take the bus around so data will be helpfull. Currently I have my plan with chatr, 3G which I believe does not work in the states. Thank you.

3G is nonfunctional in the States now in most places, and intolerably slow where it may still be in operation.

There are MANY options for using data in another country, but my go-to for the US has long been to simply stop by any T-Mobile store, explain to the clerk that I want a one-month non-renewable SIM (or e-sim) and data. This used to be called the “tourist plan.” IIRC, it costs about US$30 and offers essentially unlimited LTE or 5G data. Obviously, using a different SIM card means people cannot call you or text you based on your Canadian number. IMessages (blue bubbles) to other Apple devices will continue to work, but regular texting can’t as it is based on your Canadian phone number

If you want to use your Canadian number while in the US, your primary option is to use the roaming plan of your carrier. Chattr doesn’t have such a plan for the US, so the SIM card/eSIM option is likely the only affordable option for you.

Alan did not link to his travel notes in this week’s shownotes, as he’s likewise out of the country.

Haven’t explored the Amazon option much, but a quick search looks like a mix of no-name companies (who knows what areas they cover?) and overpriced big national US providers.
