Apple TV vs LG tv

Strangest thing happened that can only be solved by brighter brains than mine! Began watching movie (apple rental). Turned up the volume then a few mins in the music got so loud I turned it down. When I went to turn it up again it wouldn't work. So I have volume - just no volume control up or down. Grabbed the tv remote and same thing. Tested batteries, unplugged everything, re-plugged. Volume control works on the button under the TV but still not working on Apple TV remote or TV remote. After putting up with the stupid robot on the LG support line I finally got a human who told me she would send a new remote in the mail. So my brain cannot understand. How is it that both Apple TV remote and the LG remote do not work. All the other buttons work on each remote but not the volume control. THEN --- I decided to watch tv with my woop-de-do Sennheiser headphones. AND GUESS WHAT?? They don't work at all now! The red light comes on but no sound at all.

Does anyone out there have any idea what caused this and what I can do? And do you agree with me that a new remote from LG will NOT solve this??
Thanks everyone!

I'd have to know a bit more about your TV setup, but you're saying you have an Apple TV box, as well as your LG TV with its own Apple TV app.
Do you use speakers other than the TV's own built-in speakers, such as a soundbar or HomePods, et al?

It is possible the Apple Remote's battery could have gone dead; it's a rechargeable battery inside recent models, so it will take a while to recharge them via Lightning. That doesn't explain the mystery, though.

Since the source of the video you were watching was the Apple TV box, I'm going to guess the blame goes there, though it is possible you somehow switched the sound output (which would explain why the Sennheisers, which work from a base connected to the TV by wire, aren't working), Try rebooting the Apple TV box and maybe do a system update and reboot using the Settings menu on it.

Hi Chas.
No external speakers. no Home Pods. I plugged in the Apple TV remote overnight. Didn't help. I will reboot the Apple TV.
Not sure how to do a system update but I'll give it a try. Stay tuned.

I unplugged the ATV and then rebooted via the settings. Updates are up to date.
Now the volume control DOES work on the Apple TV but not on the LG. I'm okay with that because I use the Apple one 95% of the time. Never did like it that the LG menu came up all the time. Now when I turn it on (which I've done twice now) it goes right to Apple TV!!
however, alas, my Sennheisers still do not work. I did unplug them before and they still didn't work. I'll try to unplug them now.
Stay tuned.

Take a look at this video: https://www.amazon.com/vdp/fe8bcca5c213441bab80146c244943af?product=B00SLUI5SA

In particular, use the optical cable if your TV is equipped with a digital audio port (and it should be), be sure the TV’s audio output is set for optical output and PCM (this you control with the remote that came with the LG TV). Depending on how long you’ve had it, the rechargeable batteries in the earcup may also need charging or have simply been recharged too many times and need replacing. Any rechargeable AA batteries should do the trick.

Thanks Chas! Genius! I could not find the proper wording as you had above but when I phoned LG, even the menu wording she had did not match my tv's menu's. Long story short. Apple remote and Sennheisers are working but not the volume control on the LG tv remote. I don't care as for 99% of time I use Apple TV remote. So all is good.
Thanks again.
