Can junk mail notifications be silenced?

Most of us get junk mail, and I get a lot often in waves of 10 to 15 in an hour. My phone dings every time I get junk mail, and it's disruptive when I'm trying to have a conversation. I have an iPhone 16 Pro and am wondering if, and how I can turn off notifications for Junk.

Yes, you can turn off notifications for junk mail on both Mac and iPhone. On your Mac, go to Mail > Settings > Junk Mail and adjust the settings, while on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Mail and customize the notification settings for the Junk Mail folder. The same goes for iPad.

Thank you so much for your response Charles, however your instructions did't work. I researched a number of other solutions, but none of them worked either. I was unable to find any of the settings on my iPhone. BTW, I also contacted Apple Support who screen-shared and they couldn't figure it out either ! I ended up turning the volume all the way down so I didn't have to hear notifications all day - even that didn't work.

This is FYI only, and nothing further asked of you. Hopefully, this issue may resolve itself after the new roll-out starting on Tuesday.

On the Mac, you can create a rule that any email from a sender not in your address book should be marked junk and moved to the Junk folder.

Then, at your leisure, you can look through the Junk folder and add the people/companies you like to your address book/contacts, which will immediately stop them being marked as Junk.

Let me clarify one of my previous instructions.

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Mail, pick your email account of choice (you may only have one), and turn OFF Alerts.

That will stop the dings.
