Can the iPad be hacked?

I have a 64gb iPad2 updated to v10.2
Yesterday, when a link I have often used before opened up, it rolled quickly through a number of urls (unusual) and settled on one which had a popup message that I managed to see while I was equally quick about closing. It said the iPad had been hacked. Is this possible? How can I tell if true? What can I do?

I answered this on the listserv, but the short version is no, the iPad can't be "hacked." You can fall victim to "scare ware" like that that tries to trick you into calling a number or other such action. It's more likely that the site you were going to has been hacked, or excepted advertising that is deceptive in nature.
