Clearing Inbox

As I transition from Shaw email to Gmail, I have set on Shaw WebMail a forwarding of all incoming messages to the Gmail address. When these are downloaded into the Gmail address in Mail, I either delete or, if needed to be kept are moved to a specific appropriate folder under Import (created by Byte Computers when I purchased the iMac).

For some reason, despite literally grabbing and moving the message of even deleting, it keeps coming back into the InBox. Never did this when the Shaw address was being used. Any thoughts on how to overcome this silliness.

Just a thought. Perhaps your old Shaw (POP account) was set up to keep a copy of your messages on its server so when you delete the forwarded one shaw thinks it needs to send another copy along to you??? One of the settings for the old shaw account is to remove emails after so many days/weeks (or never etc.) Should be told to remove from shaw server when moved to your computer (Mail) program. Therefore no copy left on the server.

I am sure others with way more understanding of this will add to my reply.

Thanks Cougurr, I thought that might be the case as well as the POP account is set up that way. However, after a message sent to Shaw address is received and forwarded, looking at the Inbox on the Shaw web server shows the messages are neither in the Inbox nor in the Sent nor Trash.

That’s because when the forwarding was set, it was also instructed NOT to keep a copy of the message on the Shaw server (to prevent it filling up, which is really easy to have happen).

It’s unclear where you are “moving” the forwarded Shaw message in Gmail to.

Are you using the Apple Mail client, or using the Gmail website?

When Apple Mail was set up and older email messages were transferred from Microsoft Outlook when I converted, the now defunct Apple retailer that was on William St in Esquimalt established a primary Folder called Import within which I create sub-folders to retain emails I wish to keep. So the Inbox has the email addresses, one of which is the Gmail one. So I simply drag and move a message as I have done since the beginning to either Trash or a sub-folder. Periodically, I would go back to the Shaw WebMail server and delete everything.

The incoming messages to the Shaw email address are forwarded to the Gmail address which is opened in Apple Mail. It is located in the Inbox. Concurrently, incoming messages to the Gmail address in the Inbox also are placed automatically in Archive.

Does this help?

They did you a great favour. That is the correct method to preserve email from a provider you no longer use — store it in a folder under the “On My Mac” heading, meaning those emails are preserved independently of any current or future provider. As long as you are backing up your Mac, you’ll never lose those rescued emails.
