Difficulty getting Gmail on phone

I’ve just discovered that my iphone 10S is no longer collecting my Gmail. I’ve tried deleting the account and reinstalling, twice, but even tho it appears in my settings there is no Gmail coming to my inbox. I’ve sent numerous test emails to my Gmail address and while they come into my iPad just fine, they do not on my phone. I’m sure I did not recently do anything intentional to disrupt my Gmail.
Any ideas are most welcome. If I can’t crack this in a day or two I’ll call Apple. In the mean time I’ve installed the Gmail app, which works fine.

First thing that needs to be clarified: is this a @telus.net gmail account, or a @gmail.com account?

Assuming the latter, I'm assuming that there's a bad item in the properties associated with the account, so try this: instead of selecting Google automatically (which should work, but for some reason isn't doing that in this case), obtain the data on what the properties should be for Google's IMAP settings (should be very easily findable in a search on any search engine), choose to set up an account entirely manually and apply the settings you found for Google's IMAP settings.

Merry Christmas everyone! For some reason things worked tonight. I began to set up Gmail using my iOS Settings-Mail location and oddly it asked me to sign in to Gmail, which led through to the Gmail web sign in page. I signed in. I then received email notices of sign in on an iOS device, ( to my Gmail account) but clicked the top left where it led me back to settings. Can’t recall the details after that but soon my iOS mail app was receiving my test Gmail sends. So now my phone is receiving Gmail again via Apple Mail app. All good. Confused, but good.

It is normal (when adding a Gmail or Microsoft email account) to have a pop-up asking you to sign in with your Google (or MS) credentials. All good.
