Do WiFi chips fail on desk top computers?

No sure if that is the right wording, but it is possible that something like this could happen and if so, is it repairable or renewable or does it mean a new computer? My desktop is giving me problems with extremely slow downloading and is about 5 years old.
Thank you.

Is this possible? Yes.

Is it likely? No.

First thing to try is visit fast.com or speedtest.net with a web browser, and check your speed. Whatever result you get, compared it to your Shaw or Telus bill to see what speed you are paying for (usually phrased as "Internet 100," meaning 100Mbps, or some other number. If there's a big discrepancy between your results and the internet speed you're signed up for, you may need to touch base with your provider. If you're using a third-party router, that could also be the issue.

Thank you Chas, still doing some digging into my provider. I am in the US having moved here some years ago but still keep my VMUG membership current. I have a feeling that the huge developments surrounding me now and still being added on to, that the provider is not keeping up may be part of the problem slowing things down, I could be wrong, we are a rural community. I do keep doing speed checks at various times of the day just to get some king of pattern then will challenge them again.
