Epson 2850-ET

My printer is working fine, but the scanner function is not, and I scan frequently. Now when click on "Scan" I get the attached screenshot, accompanied by the tri-colour spinner. I have tried a number of suggestions (rebooting, re-installing etc.) to no avail, and would appreciate some advice. I am using Epson SmartScan, but Epson Scan 2 and Epson Scan Utility are also downloaded.

We have an ET 2750 but this might be helpful. Recently my wife couldn't scan. Printing was still OK. We deleted the printer and then "looked for a printer" and reconnected and all was fine. We use Epson scan 2
