General meeting in April?

I assume the general meeting in April will be cancelled as we are supposed to be practising social distancing. And would the hall even be open anyway?
Can someone please confirm?

The exec are looking into a virtual meeting via some conferencing software like Zoom or WebEx. We'll let the membership know about this for the general and SIG meetings.

Zoom has been in the (online) press a lot lately due to its security foibles. I know they have made recent updates to address these, but perhaps if that is the app decided on, the exec will also comment on its present status in that regard.

You can see the President's message on this website for more information about this now. We'll be using Zoom to conduct the general meeting. For security reasons, I would strongly recommend only installing Zoom on iOS devices (rather than Macs). We hope you'll be able to join us.

I will certainly be trying. I have loaded the Zoom app on my iPhone and went as far as having it ask for a password. Still not clear on how I get that but I will try following the link in the President's message at the time of the meeting to see if it automatically fills that in at that time.

Yes, sorry that I didn't come back to this thread to rave about how impressed I was with the experience, once I had tried it. Connection was a breeze once the meeting was opened up and the video and audio quality was great. I am a convert!

Don't get too used to it ... we'll keep doing it till it is safe to get together again but we certainly look forward to that day with keen anticipation!

I am curious. Would group FaceTime work for a group the size of the Sidney SIG? I see we will be using Zoom but that got me wondering...

FaceTime lacks any way to show the screen rather than faces, and doesnt have “class/business” controls a host would need, do it’s not well-suited to what a SIG does. That said, it’s great for friend/family chats and that sort of thing.

Got it. Zoom certainly seems to do the things we need for our meetings.

Several of us had trouble connecting initially because the link didn't seem to have the password imbedded within it. A few of us messaged Chas for the password and then he sent an email to Shirley and she distributed the password in an email to the people on her mailing list. That password worked to get one on, and several more people joined after that. Sorry we missed you.
