This is not an operation for the feint of heart. I found this discussion on the topic:

But as you'll see, this is simply not a repair a non-tech can do, and third-party cards not compatible with that specific Mac model are right out. You can get a compatible card pulled from an iMac (similar vintage only) and have a tech (like say EB or Byte) install it for you, but ... get an estimate and see if you think it's worth it.
