iPad Sync/Backup

Operating an iPad Air 2 [short name is iPad (3)] running 11.2.5 and connecting to an iMac running macOS High Sierra v10.13.3
To connect the iPad to the iMac for sync/backup, I use a Kensington multi-port, open iTunes and start the process.

There are two popups per the attachment.
1. The first indicating failure to copy to Macintosh HD failed as folder cannot be found; however, Macintosh HD is shown as a Device - should I be creating a folder under Favorites?
2. The second indicates inability to copy a certain file (it is a pdf file) to iPad(3) because it could not be found. However, it is on iPad(3) in iBooks. It is also in iBooks on the iMac as well as in a sub-directory in the path david/David-Personal/Photography/e-Books/Breakthrough Photography. Any thoughts on why this popup would occur?

Finally, the sync/backup has been running now for over an hour and seems to be frozen at Step 5 of 5 _ Preparing to copy items????

Thanks

Syncing of iOS devices to Macs is handled through iTunes. You can also sync an iPad’s contents to iCloud if you have the space. Neither method involves the macOS Finder at all.

Yes, as indicated Charles, I use iTunes to start the process. Not sure what you mean by referring to macOS Finder as I did not.

Yes, sorry, I was looking at the window behind your error message dialogs and didn't notice the iTunes forrest for the app window trees. :)

Generally speaking, an error like what you are getting could be indicative of a number of things, but the first place I'd check is (odd as this may sound) that your iTunes version is up-to-date. The message about the folder not being found means a folder that iTunes requires to manage the syncing process, so trying to save elsewhere won't fix the problem.

The second error message you're getting suggests that at one time the file that now is stored inside iBooks was located elsewhere, so it is reporting that it is no longer in its original location. I wouldn't worry about that message, though possibly there's an alias to it on your Mac somewhere that is the source of the confusion.

In the meantime, it doesn't sound like the backups are being done due to a problem in iTunes, so for now I'd suggest you switch to having the iPad back up to iCloud instead. In order for this to work, you may need to upgrade to the $1.29/month 50GB iCloud storage tier.
