Is it possible or worth it to change the HD on 2017 27" Imax

Hi

I am thinking of changing my hard drive to a SSD for my 2017 27" Imax. Is is possible to do that and if so, who do you recommend to do it?

It is possible, but a job not for the feint of heart. The glass front has to be unbonded from the rest to gain access and the risk of shattering the screen is high. You should go to a certified Apple tech to do this work. Someone like Simply Computing and London Drugs have Apple trained techs. There are probably other outfits in town that may also. The other question will be how much will it cost to have this work done and then you can decide if it is worth putting that much money into a 7 year old iMac. (lovely as it is!) Another option you might consider is to get a fast SSD based external drive and hang it off a Thunderbolt port on the iMac. Is the Fusion drive in the iMac misbehaving or just getting full?

Thanks Dave, I am getting an error message I have not seen before. SMART Check Results with TEchTools says the Smart Check result is giving me a warning for the hard drive.

That second part didn't seem to come through but in any case, if you have reason to suspect the hard drive, it is probably better to act sooner than later. I see it is a 2 TB drive. The cost of a 2 TB SSD plus the cost to have someone install it might make you question whether the money might be better spent at this time on a newer machine. Having moved from a 2017 27" iMac myself, it is a tough choice and with no seemingly no new 27" iMac likely, I went with a Mac Mini and a good 3rd party 27"monitor.

Dave's advice is as usual very sound. I don't think I'd put too much money into a seven-year-old Mac, given that you probably should be replacing that in the next year or three (depending on what you do with it and whether it is still getting security updates/OS updates). That said, if you have a tech do this for you it won't be cheap but it will bring that machine new life in terms of responsiveness and overall speed for the remaining time you have it.

Personally, I'd put the money towards its future replacement.
