iTunes library migration

Hello. I am trying to determine if this can be done, and if so, where one might go to get this done and what that might cost. I have a friend who has the following scenario:
  • Has an older version of iTunes on a dying PC laptop and has no password to that old iTunes account
  • Burned a bunch of CD’s on to that laptop which created an iTunes library that he has downloaded to and old iPod.
  • Has bought an iPhone and iPad both associated with a new Apple ID
He wants to know if he can get that library moved over from the laptop to Apple Music on the new ID account.

Thanks for any help.

He’ll lose access to any songs he bought from iTunes until he can figure out or reset the old Apple ID password (I.e., the old iTunes password), but he should be able to copy the Music folder on his PC to a thumb drive.

Getting that music onto the new iPhone and/or iPad will likely require a recent-model Mac or PC to accomplish. A place such as London Drugs can likely do that for you if you don’t have one, but I’m not sure what the fee would be. Stop by during the day to your nearest store and ask one of the techs.

Another option: forget all this, and subscribe to Apple Music. Nearly every song ever recorded, instantly accessible on his new devices using that new Apple ID. $10/month after the free trial.

Thanks for the reply. He never bought any songs on the defunct account and is only wondering about the library of burned songs. I have moved my library between MacBooks, but with no USB in the ipad or phone makes me shake my head. I thought of using adapters to plug the (32pin) Ipod directly into the (lightning) ipad and wondered if it would just download the library. I will stop in a LD and inquire. Thanks again Chas.

That method will not work, as the iPad does not have a "file explorer/Finder" as PCs or Macs do. The easiest method by far is to simply sync your Music library on the Mac to iCloud (and same on the iPad) but this would require knowing the Apple ID password. Without that, the second easiest method is to plug the iPad into a Mac or PC with an existing iTunes Library (such as his PC laptop) and use the Windows version of iMazing (C$45) to move the library over.

Other than those methods, it would be best to use the services of a professional so as to not lose the ripped songs.
