Over the past month or so I have not been able to import any photos or videos from my iPhone to iMac.
At one point in time... long long ago ... 2 years i was able to connect the phone and all the photos would
be dumped into camera uploads in Dropbox... LOVELY INDEED.... This has not happend for over a year.

I was able to open Photos, and import stuff there. This stopped functioning ... oh about 3 months ago...
What a pain having to send photos or videos via email to get them on to my computer....

Soooooo.... what do I have to do the get stuff easily. OS 10.13.6

Import Selected and Import All are greyed

More information about the model and OS version of the iPhone and what model of Mac might be useful.

You also mentioned Dropbox ... this could be why Photos doesn’t see any new photos ... are they already up,os DED to Dropbox first?

I have an iPhone 7 with iOS 13.2.3 and an iMac 10.13.6 (21.5-inch) 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5

I have been using AirDrop which get me there but compared to having the images get uploaded into Dropbox automatically .... pales
When I plug in iPhone .... Photos does not open. When I open manually, all I get is a blank document.... From what I read on the net
Photos should automatically open and I can pick and chose what I want..... I use to be able to do this.

Trust this is the info you need.

If you are connecting the iPhone to your Mac with a cable, then you might want to launch Image Capture and see what is set to happen.

The box shown in the rectangle may have been set to "No application". Strangely in spite of all the rearrangement of what does what in macOS over the years, Image Capture still seems to be in control of what happens when you connect a camera (or iPhone) to the Mac.
