Password for iPad - no luck with Apple

Bought an iPad for my wife several years ago.
Lost the Apple password.
Can't change her password, can't access her iCloud mail, can't ....
Can't even buy from the Apple Store.

Seems that the original Sales Slip has to be found to prove ownership in order to have Apple do anything.
That slip "may" be in the house somewhere, but "Where?"

This is obviously urgent because I got her started on Jig Saw puzzles …
anything "free" is totally and constantly interrupted by Google ads which is extremely frustrating.
So, now, I'm frustrated too!

What do I do now? Sell it and buy a new one? Thoughts appreciated.

Did you forget the PIN CODE to open the iPad, or did you forget the Apple ID password? If the latter, you can easily reset it by visiting iforgot.apple.com.

You will NEED a mobile phone that can receive text messages for an Apple ID reset to work.

If you forgot the pin code, check with any certified Apple Tech here in town. They may be able to override and erase the iPad — so you will lose everything on it, but you can restore from an iCloud backup if you were doing those.

You can also verify that you own the iPad by visiting appleid.Apple.com and signing in. There you can see a list of your registered devices.

If the iPad isn’t listed or it’s older than six years, I’d suggest getting one of the new ones.
