Security Question

When I bought my first iPhone last June, I was given a phone number that was obviously used previously by some girl, who gave the number up. I began receiving texts from some guy who didn't know she had "moved on", phone calls from unknown people (easy to block) and messages from companies she must have dealt with, advertising some upcoming sales event. All this is very understandable and in time is decreasing as I do not respond.

But tonight I received a notification on the iPhone: "$19.99 Ray-ban&Oakley Sunglasses..." which went directly into my Calendar as an "all day" event.

How the heck does that happen? How can some stranger add to my calendar without my blessing? Have I missed a setting somewhere that would prevent that?

At the bottom was a chance to "accept" "maybe" or "decline". I am hesitant to use the latter as that would confirm I am actually here.

Check your Calendar (on your Mac) settings to see if you have it set to accept invites.

Also check your iPhone's Calendar settings for this, and also check your Facebook settings to see if you've inadvertently allowed FB invites to be sent to your Calendar.

Thanks for the suggestions, Chas,

I went through preferences for Calendar on the Mac (Sierra) and can't see where I have a choice on that.

The same on my iPhone in Settings > Calendar. I don''t see where such a thing would be controlled.

And I don't do Facebook at all. So still at a loss on this, I am afraid.

Just to reprint the workaround blocking method here (until Apple fixes this issue, which it undoubtedly will):

Go to icloud.com and login to your iCloud account
Navigate to the Calendar App
Click in the settings (gear icon) in the lower left of the screen
Select "Preference" from the menu
Select the "Advanced" tab
Under the "Invitations" section select the "Email to" options (see the screenshot below)

Here's another article about this.

It was this RayBan spam that I had received and my use of my iCloud account for email is VERY limited and careful.

It wasn't you, it was a flaw in the way Apple has Calendar automatically take in invitations that spammers exploited. They have now fixed the issue for the short term, a longer-term solution is likely to come along in due course.

Yes, I have been reading about this on a lot of sites.

I find it interesting that I was hit with this (Ray Ban sunglasses ad) in my calendars so early on before everyone else seemed to get it and I rarely use my iCloud account for anything. Must just be darn "lucky" !

Oops, not sure how I managed to post that reply twice. It didn't "appear to go" the first time I hit "submit" so I hit it again.
