Signing up for AppleTV+ question

If one is thinking of signing up for the new AppleTV+ service and wants to be able to share with family members, does it matter whether you subscribe to AppleTV+ first and then go ahead setting up family sharing of that service or do you attempt to set up the family sharing first?

Actually I just went ahead and set up the AppleTV+
We had the grand kids over so we watched Snoopy in Space (10 episodes so far). Later I went to look into setting up family sharing and it asked for a Visa number so I backed out. Not sure if family sharing would be used anyway (neither my wife or daughter would likely watch anything on their iPhones, my wife unlikely to watch even on her MacBook Pro and my daughter has a Windows laptop.). And we aren't too interested at this point in any of the other aspects of family sharing. (Sharing the popcorn is bad enough.)

Family sharing is NOT a paid service so I'm not sure how you go to a page asking for payment information UNLESS you were in the App Store and haven't yet put any payment information in there (and that's not where you go for Family Sharing anyway). You can find out more about Family Sharing here: https://www.apple.com/family-sharing/

Well I know I was asked for payment details, and from https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201079

"Family purchases and payments
Learn how shared purchases work with Family Sharing, what the family organizer is responsible for, and how to update your payment methods.

When you set up purchase sharing, one adult in the family—the family organizer—agrees to pay for any purchases that family members make while they're part of the family group. With Ask to Buy, you can manage what your family purchases. And it's easy to change the payment method that you use with Family Sharing at any time."

I didn't see how to skip past it at the time and have sort of given up because it is not important to me.

So my original answer was correct: if the point of Family Sharing is to share *purchases* (including free ones) with others, then you must have some kind of payment information in iTunes (it can be PayPal, for example, or store credit -- though a credit card is easiest). Per the title of this thread, you're planning on sharing a PAID subscription service, so clearly you have to have payment information for billing. Family Sharing is free, but TV+ is not (even if you're getting your first year free for having bought some Apple hardware).

Yes, and I have given Apple my credit card info previously, as I have made app store purchases, music purchases in the past, but perhaps I have gotten confused by which Apple ID I have always used for these purchases and which AppleID I used when signing up for the free AppleTV +

Your answer, as always, is a great source of valuable insight that will make me ponder this a bit deeper. Thanks, Chas

Try not to have more than two Apple IDs if possible, because it can get quite confusing otherwise! :)

Yes, I agree 100% but I made that mistake (getting a second AppleID) years ago and have regretted it ever since. If only Apple would come up with a way to combine them into one AppleID. Somehow when we set up my wife's stuff she has 2 AppleID's (a Telus email and an iCloud email) that are merely aliases of each other).
