Siri came alive

Yesterday BBC reported about Amazon's Alexia recording and transmitting a conversation.

Two days ago, my iPad was in sleep mode while charging when suddenly Siri came alive and responded "How can I help you" while my wife and I were conversing in the other room.

Anybody else have such an occurrence or an explanation?

Sure -- you have "hey siri" set up, and it thought it heard that phrase. As there's no reason to have "hey siri" turned on for an ipad, just disable that and use the home button to activate Siri on that device when you need it.

Yes, “Hey Siri” was/is turned on as is the Home button but every test I make cannot get Siri to respond UNLESS the Home button is held down when the phrase is used! Reading an email, looking at an internet page or whatever, there is no response; in sleep mode, no response. It is thus hard to fathom how a sound from another room activated Siri from sleep mode?

When “hey Siri“ is turned on, the phone is always listening for that phrase. Sometimes it misinterprets noises as that phrase, and may accidentally activated. When “hey Siri“ is turned off, you must use the home button in order to activate it. The home button will also work if hey Siri is turned on.
