Slow Wifi

Hello everyone. My daughter has asked me if VMUG guru's might have an answer to her problem. At her office her service is 600mbps download speed. She has been having problems over the past few days with it being so slow, the provider sent a tech out to check things over for her and standing in front of the main computer she uses it registered 600mbps but she is only getting 50mbps registering as the download speed on the computer, this computer is 10 ft from the router. Another desk which is further away from the router is getting the 600mbps and a third desk in the same room as that desk is only registrering 50mbp download as well and that desk is probably 12 ft away. The provider is saying that something with the computer is choking off download speed to those two computers, both are desktops. She does have an older computer that is running Monterey and I am not sure if it can be updated to anything newer. Much appreciate any suggestions you might have as to the cause and possible solutions she could look at.

First thing I’d suggest trying is to get your hands on a LONG ethernet cord, take one of the slow machines off Wi-Fi, and connect the ethernet cord. If the speed suddenly goes up to 600, then there’s something funny with the Wi-Fi or some interference between the one that is having no issues and the ones that are slow.

Second thought: check the two slow computers for malware using MalwareBytes. They might have some malware that is borrowing bandwidth to do heaven knows what.

Update on slow WiFi, she has done the test with the long ethernet cord and it did increase the speed to start with and then backed off to slow again. Haven't talked with her since but I think things haven't changed. I will say that both desktops are Apple but the one that gets the 600 is not, if that makes a difference. This problem has been occurring over the past few months and getting slower and slower. Thanks for your input.

This update makes me believe that the non-Mac is suffering from some type of virus or malware. I would certainly recommend at least checking for this with the free version of MalwareBytes (.com)
