Switching user in Apple TV + How?

We have the 1080p Apple TV box. (infamous black remote). I have a paid subscription to the Apple TV + service. We have watched all of season 1 of a few series and are into season 2 of some of the same shows. But tonight I somehow fumbled the remote when going for one of our shows and the screen suddenly said "switching user". After watching a spinning icon for quite some time it finally came back and we are now at episode 1 of the show for which we had watched several episodes. I tried to look up how to switch (back) to a different user and all I could see at first was to go to the settings app on the Apple TV box. But when I go there it says I am the current user. Later I found an article that said hold down the Home button on the remote until the control panel slides in from the right and change the user there, but when I do that it shows I am the user. How do I get back to "me" in the Apple TV + service so that it remembers what episodes we have watched? And as a bonus question, what button combination on the remote might I have pressed to get me into this mess, (so that I can avoid that in the future?)

An update to this situation: When I started up my Apple TV box tonight, went to the Apple TV app, and got into Apple TV +, it immediately presented me with the "switching user" and rotating icon screen again. When that finally completed I checked the shows we regularly watch and they were back to showing the episodes we were next wanting to see (i.e. not back at episode 1 of a series again.) So it fixed itself and all is well.
But I had never seen that "switching user" screen before in any other use of this service.
