Syncing iPhone to iMac

A new entry on my iMac is not showing up on my iPhone.
The iPhone is using 13.6.1 … the iMac is using 10.15.6
I've Synced and synced and, now, I'm getting a sinking feeling!

A new entry of what? If you are using Catalina to sync your iPhone, then it generally handles music, photos, audiobooks (in the Books app now), podcasts, TV shows, and files stored on iCloud (with some exceptions).

Sorry … the new entry was in Contacts, done. on the iMac. It has not been transferred to the iPhone during syncing.
The iPad is keeping up-to-date with the iMac.
I guess there must be a setting in the iPhone that is not set to sync.

Check your iCloud settings on both devices (if you are using iCloud to sync contacts), otherwise check your settings on the Mac when you plug in the iPhone to the Mac. I sync everything through iCloud, but for those syncing directly to their Mac, here's where you manage the contact syncing (note that some areas of this screen shot are greyed out for me but wouldn't be for you):
