Unable to log in to my laptop

Hi everyone, I have a need to use my Macbook Pro 13, it is a few years old and I think the OS is High Sierra but I haven't been using it. I have charged it, it gets to the log in screen but when I put my password in it won't accept it. I have tried numerous times, and it is the correct password since I have it written down and haven't changed it. Having tried a number of time, one after the other, I expected it to maybe give me a popup with a hint but that didn't happen. Now I am not sure how to proceed, can anyone give me suggestions or is the only option to go through the holding down the OPTION key and following that process which scares me to death to be honest.

When I have a password foo-foo, it is usually one of two things: I have the caps lock key on; or, I have written it down ( or typed it) and accidentally placed a capital in the beginning where it should be lower case. (The computer usually capitalizes the first word in a sentence).

Thanks Tim, I do that also, but not in this case, I have tried it both ways and it was working fine the last time I used it a few months ago. Good suggestion though.

I wonder if it’s possible your machine doesn’t have a login password?

try just pressing return when prompted for a password.

Thanks for the suggestioin Chas, it did have a password because I had it written down so was perplexed why it wasn't working, I bit the bullet and did get into it via Terminal, was scared to do it but since I couldn't use it I didn't think I could make things any worse. Went online and printed off the instructions to get into any computer without having the password and followed them. It worked, so now I am using it all the time since I am trying to use it to project sewing patterns onto my cutting surface via a projector and the projector isn't co-operating. But it keeps me occupied during the current COVID climate.
