A friend, who is a whiz on a Windows system, recently purchased an "out of date" MacBook. There were a few problems with it but, with his wonderful ability to research problems, he now has it fully upgraded - with a 500 GB SSD - and had Catalina installed.
Considering that, earlier on, I had suggested that he sell it "for what it is", my mouth is wide open in astonishment that, today, he was able to tell me, rather proudly, that Catalina is installed and is working very well, thank you!
For anyone with a "hopelessly out of date" MacBook, a look at this site might be encouraging -
