Wiping iMac Question

I am helping a friend get her Mac ready to sell. We recently attempted this on a 2009 iMac and ran into a problem. We used Disk Utility to erase the drive but after that there was no way to reinstall the OS. There was an option to reinstall it but when we click on that we were told that it couldn't be done because there was no internet connection. What should we do to avoid this problem with the current wipe?

The 2009 iMac hearkens back to the days when OS X was installed with a bootable DVD. It shipped with Snow Leopard (10.6). Does your friend still have the Install DVDs that came with the iMac? Failing that you'd need to scare up a retail copy of the Snow Leopard Intall media.

What happens if you hold down the command key and r when you turn it on? That should take you to the recovery partition, and yes you’ll have to connect it to the internet via wi-Fi or Ethernet cord.
