wireless migration iphone 6s to iphone xr

I have watched a few youtubes showing how to do a wireless migration from the old iphone to the new iphone xr. I will do a back up prior to starting the process. All the videos state that the new phone has to be on the same operating system as the old phone or newer. Now with apple updating the ios system very frequently, how do I ensure that the new phone is on the same ios? Is there a way to update the ios? Step by step directions would be appreciated.

I really hope I can use this function of transfer the data between phones.

Fingers crossed until I have an reply.

thanks.

I believe the 6s can still be updated to the latest version of iOS. So go to Settings > General > Software Update and let it update.
Check that the Xr is also on the latest version (it probably won't be if you just bought it. So to check, go to Settings > General > About and check that the version is 13.2.2 (at least on Nov. 9). You probably will need to go back one screen and then go to Settings > General > Software Update, just as you did on the 10s

When I tried to migrate from my SE to my new 11 it seemed to start OK but then quit. I have heard (but not read anywhere) that both devices should be plugged into power which I had not done. So you might want to make sure that is the case when you do the migration.

While the ad-hoc wireless transfer is pretty neat, the USUAL way people transfer their data from one iPhone to another is by backing up the old iPhone to iCloud and then, during the opening process on the new iPhone, restoring the data from the iCloud backup. This works across different iOS systems and is quite painless with a fast internet connection.

Or if you are too cheap to pay for more than the default iCloud storage (I am talking about me here *) you can make an encrypted backup in iTunes (Mojave or before) by connecting with a cable to your Mac. IN Catalina, of course, that is now done directly through the finder.

*actually, it isn't the cost of extra iCloud storage I mind so much but rather the monthly charge. Is it possible to pay for an entire year at a time so there is only one charge in a year?

Just buy a $25.00 iTunes gift card (if say you're buying the 50GB storage option) and redeem it, upgrade your storage and then tell Apple to take the monthly payment out of your Store Credit. You'll have more than a years credit with a $25 gift card. Don't forget to set up a reminder to buy another $25 card a year from now. =)

Thank you for the replies. Can I update the ios without signing in as a user? I'll to try and type out what I mean. If I pull the new phone out of the box and turn it on, can I go into the settings and make sure it is on the most up to date IOS system? This would all be before I tries to do a transfer between phones. I would really like to use this new feature. I know I can set up the phone from a back up. Again, thank you all for your help!!

Great idea that I hadn't considered. That suits my way of doing things.

When you take the new iPhone out of the box and turn it on, it will begin the setup process. Beginning from "Hello" (in various languages) you need to pretty well just follow the steps at that point. There is a point in this new setup when it asks "Do you want to set this up as a new device or from an older device". (Or words to that effect.) So at this point you haven't been given the chance to go into settings and update the iOS.

If you haven't updated the 6s in a while it is likely to be on an older version of iOS anyway and then I think your update method will still work.

No. But you CAN buy the extra storage (if you actually need it -- most iPhone backups don't take up 5GB unless there are a lot of photos) for one month and then downgrade back to the free tier at any time. You can also load up a PayPal or iTunes credit (as mentioned above) with sufficient funds and then not worry about it for a year.

No.

But a new iPhone in box would have no later than one of the latest versions of iOS 12 on it (and may well have iOS 13 on it at this point, if it's really new) so I'm not sure this is any sort of problem. SURELY at this point you have already updated your iPhone 6s to AT LEAST iOS 11, which is what's required for the "Quick Start" feature according to Apple:https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT210216

For the full wireless migration feature you're referring to, however, you'll need your iPhone 6s to be on at least iOS 12.4 for that to work. The new iPhone will of course already be on 12.4 or later (the last version of iOS 12 was 12.4.3).
