Replacement for Time Capsule

There have been discussions about the advisability of replacing an aging Time Capsule being used for Time Machine backups due to a flaw discovered in its internal hard drive. There are lots of cheap external drives available that can perform that function for many people in this situation. In my case, we use the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups for my iMac and my wife's MacBook Pro via our wifi network. Are there drives available that provide the same function at a similarly cheap price? And are they available locally? Or do I just plug a normal external drive into one of the ports on the Time Capsule and ignore the internal drive?

The "backing up" part of Time Capsule czn be done by almost any network-attached drive -- almost all of them support Time Machine, but check before buying of course.

I have been using external drives connected to my Time Capsule for many years. My most recent 2 have been Buffalo 4TB drives. I like them because they are fairly quiet and they shutdown (power off) when not in use between backups. This is very important feature. I plug it into USB port and I use them to backup my iMac (ethernet to Time Capsule) and my 2013 Macbook Pro over wifi of my Time Capsule.
From Amazon comments "Time Capsule support offers scheduled backups for protecting Mac computers"
I last purchased in 2017 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B013P0JGEW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Locally, I expect that stores like London Drugs and Simply Computing will have their favourite external drives available for Time Capsule.

Thanks for sharing you experiences with this. I may experiment with small drives I have on hand before setting off to buy one I want to depend on.
