Apple Contacts will not allow me to add new contacts

Is there a limit to the number of contacts you can have in Contacts?
When I try to add a new contact, it lets me start the name then goes blank. I have about 1,500 contacts so is there a limit or is it something else?

You didn't specify on macOS or iOS or whether you are trying to include non-Apple Contact services but according to this, you aren't even close to a limit with iCloud! https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202158
