No signal to TV

I have an earlier generation Apple TV, one just before the version with the better remote. I’ve been using it lately as a bridge between iTunes on an old MacBook and our audio system and it’s working well. There’s a digital to analog converter and the Apple TV is connected with ethernet and there is an optical output from the Apple TV. However, when I disconnect all that to use the Apple TV on the TV, I get nothing. I’ve tried both HDMI ports on the TV and unplugged and plugged in a few times. I’ve tried both wi-fi and ethernet to connect the Apple TV, but it makes no difference—No video is the message on the TV.

Is there anything I’m missing? There’s no reason I can think of that the HDMI cable should have quit working since the last time it was used a few months ago.

Not yet, but I plan to test my cable at a friend's place soon, and replace it if necessary.
