Problem with waking up Mac

My son's Mac is doing something strange. When he wakes it up his Mac's screen shows a startup screen (with the Apple and startup progress bar) but it is frozen up. He has to restart his Mac to continue. Has anyone else come across this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

It seemed to me I have had this happen on a couple of occasions and had to hold the power button down until my iMac shut down completely. Then after a few minutes I powered up again and all was OK. This hasn't happened in quite a while and suspect recent updates to OS X El Capitan may have fixed it. Is your son using an older version of El Capitan or earlier OS X?

You are correct. He has to force a shutdown and then start it up again. I'm not sure if he has updated to El Capitan. I'll check.

Sounds like it's time for a little maintenance. Ask him if he has heard of, or used, OnyX. It's a free Mac maintenance app, and one I recommend.
