video file handling and viewing Ap for MacBook Pro

I have recently imported into the Photos program a great whack of old bits of video, taken with various of my old digital cameras and in more recent years my iPhones. They were stored on an older external USB drive. Something I had not considered, is that the volume of said videos has now busted my iCloud max (2TB plan ) and now my photos won't synch between my iPad iPhone, and Mac. I imported them into Photos in the first place a few weeks ago, so I could organize and view and sort them, with the eventual outcome to produce some memorabilia videos, e.g. combine vids of 'the dog' 'fishing trips', or 'whale watching' etc. Anyhow any recommendations on how to accomplish this? I don't mind NOT having the video files on the iCloud, I am ok with keeping them on home external drives. If I take them out of Photos I'll immediately drop well below my 2TB iCloud cap. I suppose I'd be happy leaving them in Photos but I have been using iMovie to assemble the little video projects I undertake, so if I had a good organizing program and file manager it would be a start. Of course then I have to contemplate the process by which they will in future be shared from say my Iphone to my Mac, once they appear on my Mac I'll have to take them out of Photos and move them into the Ap of choice? Anyone with a bit of experience here? Many thanks.

I think what I would do in this situation is take the videos out of Photos and store them separately in a folder on your drive or an external drive. The iMovie app can be pointed to "see" this folder and you'll work with them directly there anyway. Once you've produced a finished video, you may opt to put just that back into Photos, but there's no need for the "raw footage" to live in Photos since, as you note, it uses up space in your iCloud Photo Library.

Thanks Chas, That seems to be the direction to move. I don't know what is happening but I'm not getting any forum notifications I'll contact Terry.

I've questioned this also. See the forum "Questions about the forum"
