Since we cannot attend the discussion at the VMUG meeting because we live on the mainland,
would you please advise if we acquired VPN would it help to get more US apps for the Apple TV?

A VPN will probably not help you in this area. Netflix (one of the main reasons people want to use a VPN to "pretend" they are in the US) has taken to blocking VPN services (but will not refund the money paid to subscribe). You will also need not just a US iTunes account (funded by a US card), but also a US cable subscription for many/most of the US channels offered on the US version of the tvOS app store, or an independent US subscription to things like HBO.
