My iMac using OSX 10.8.5 will not allow me to log into my Shaw account. Safari is not secure apparently for Shaw on this machine. They suggest GOOGLE CHROME - any other suggestions or is this acceptable?

You didn't mention how old your iMac is.
Is there a particular reason you can't or don't want to upgrade to El Capitan (and the latest Safari as a result)? Besides getting the more secure Safari (compared to the version you have) you will benefit from a whole lot of other very important security updates to make your overall safety better.
A number of people have spoken favourably about Google Chrome. I have no experience there but another possibility is Firefox, but again you may not be able to run the most up to date version with your older OS.
