possible malware problem

Hi all,
My husband is running 10.6.8 and uses Facebook all the time. Today when he went to login he got a big red screen that said possible virus or malware detected. I did the force quit of Safari and rebooted holding down the shift key but it still came up the same when I went to Facebook. I emptied the cache, history, shut down and unplugged for awhile. Still the same thing. I went to get Malwarebytes but they don't have it for that OS. On his iPad Facebook is darkened and it says waiting. I can't upgrade his computer as he has enough problems dealing with it so he would be totally confused if he had to learn a new OS. I am wondering if it is a Facebook problem as I can go into Safari and go to other sites without difficulty. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe there is an different application that would get rid of the Malware, if that is what it is.
Thanks,
Judi

Hi all,
Well I downloaded ClamXav and ran it and about six things came up so I trashed them and restarted the computer. Robin can now access Facebook on his desktop but on his iPad it is still darkened and says waiting. I deleted Facebook on the iPad and tried to reinstall it but the little wheel just kept going and going and going so I quit the App store and now there is just a dark icon on his iPad screen. I have closed all open apps and did a shut down but it still is just a darkened icon. Anybody know what I can do to get Facebook back and running on the iPad. I am afraid that he is not up to date on it either as again I am afraid to change the iOS to a newer one because he will just be more confused than ever.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Judi

I don't mean to sound blunt, but you are at a crossroads. Either upgrade the OS on both of these devices to the current standard (and deal with some initial confusion), or this is just going to keep happening. OS versions that old no longer receive security updates, and running them is terribly risky, as you've discovered.

In the case of the iPad, I don't think there's any malware issue there, I suspect your OS is just too far out of date for the current version of Facebook. So in that case, you'll have to update – and again, for security purposes that's the recommended option.

Thanks Chas,
All is well now and the iPad has Facebook back again. I deleted it and downloaded it again and the day after I used Clamxav it mounted on the iPad. I know he should upgrade both but he is seriously ill and he would just not be able to deal with the new OS or iOS. He really just uses them for Facebook and email. There is no banking info on his computer or iPad. Everything is backed up and I do that often.
Cheers,
Judi
