Possible Messages bug in iOS 17.3 or 17.3.1?

I tried submitting feedback on this issue to Apple but they limit the number of characters, so I couldn't describe the issue properly. I then tried using the Support app on my iPhone to report it, and was called back by a representative, but he said he had no mechanism to pass on a bug report. So just in case someone here has had a similar thing occur, here goes...

On Jan. 1, 2024 I had to change the phone number on my iPhone (15 Pro). My wife, daughter and myself deleted the old number from our Contacts (all on iPhones) and added my new number. All three of us are on 17.3.1

Today my daughter sent an iMessage to my wife and myself by tacking on to an existing thread started in Sept. and last used successfully on Jan. 17 (before iOS 17.3) It arrived on my wife’s iPhone as a green bubble and I didn’t get it. I then got my wife to send a text iMessage to me as a new message (not part of a thread.) It indicated “Maybe Dave” and went as a green bubble and I did NOT get it. We then found an old thread on my wife’s iPhone between her, myself and a third party (not my daughter) that had begun long before my iPhone number changed. Deleting that entire thread fixed the issue so now my wife can send me an iMessage, it goes as a blue bubble and I DO receive it. So prior to deleting that old thread, Messages was picking up my OLD phone number, not from Contacts, NOT from the thread of myself, wife and daughter, but instead from the old thread of myself, wife and third party.

That seems like a strange place to find the phone number it wants to use for myself, and clearly started happening after the update to 17.3 (Jan 22) or 17.3.1 (Feb. 8)
