Can a person who has used Google Calendar for several years with re-occurring events import all this historical data and scheduled events into iCal in order to stop using Google Calendar and begin using iCal and have all the information in iCal.

Update:
Found information for my friend for the "sync" option to add her google calendar to the new Apple iCal she is starting to use. Went thru the steps with her to see if it would populate into her new iCal from the Google calendar. (This is actually her old Telus.net email account now handled by Google) We only did the Apple end of this inside iCal. Now I am wondering if you have to go somewhere into the Google account/Calendar and tell it also to "sync" or is that only if you wanted it to also flow back onto the Google Calendar from iCal????? (She wants to quite using Google Calendar but wants all her older and repeating items moved into the new iCal). Any clarifications greatly appreciated.

Colin, I have no idea the answer to this as I have no experience with Google calendars but rather than "sync" is there an "Export" function in Google calendars and then use Import in the Calendar app? (And I assume when you refer to iCal you are really talking about the Calendar app rather than the old iCal?)

Hi Dave
Thanks for suggestion. I also am not sure of the export side of Google in this situation either, but that would be just as useful to try as the Sync does not seem to be doing her existing stuff out of the Google side of things onto the Mac side.
Yes you are correct as I continue to show my age by referring to the Calendar App as iCal.. LOL still saying iPhoto to, instead of Photos. By the time Apple changes the names again I wiil be calling them todays correct names.

Yes, you can export Google Calendar data into a .ics file that Apple Calendar can read:

You can also opt to simply keep Google Calendar and Apple Calendar data in sync:
