keyboard preference

This morning I had a total shutdown on my computer.
It happened sometime during the night.
I had to install (from Time Machine) the OS and data.

In so doing I have lost all the “Replace With” short cuts that
I have added to the keyboard preference file.
I figure these are somewhere on time machine or probably
on the two CCC backup external drives….
How can I get this information over to my computer.

2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 OS X el Capitan 10.11.2

Not sure if this is the correct answer so decide for yourself if you want to gamble.

I think the file you might look for is com.apple.KeyboardViewer.plist which is found in your user Preferences (which is in your user Library. To get there you may have to go up to the Finder menu bar under the "Go" heading and while holding down the option key, click on the Go heading and drag down to "Library" which will appear there when the option key is held down.

If you recover this file from a Time Machine backup, be sure and go back far enough in time to where all this worked. Otherwise a more recent Time Machine backup will have the corrupted version of this file (if indeed this file is really the culprit.)

I went back to Jan 20th to get the com.apple.KeyboardViewer.plist. Preforming the restore did not result in getting the “Replace With” short cuts.
It seems I will have to take a memory pill..... and recall all those lovely shortcuts I had entered in the keyboard preference file.

I guess that means these key shortcuts aren't stored in that preferences file. Perhaps someone else will suggest the real location where that info is stored?

I guess they are not stored there.... At any rate I took some memory pills and came up with a lot of "need to have" short cuts. Thanks.

PS.... I wish that the short cuts would apply on these forum ....

It's odd that they didn't come over -- mine always have when I transfer from one machine or another using Migration Assistant.

I found out where they are stored, but they are kept in a user dictionary that is not readable by any standard app, so it's of little use to most people. Send me an email and I will send you the exact location, you might be able to retrieve it from a backup and put it in the proper place on your current system.

I'm not mentioning where it is because its stored in an area where users shouldn't be wandering around, and I don't want to give any "tinkerers" in the group any ideas! :D
