New Backup on Time Machine

Within the last month on our two Macs we received the following message from Time Machine - Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on "DPG Time Capsule". To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.
Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. This could take several hours.
Click Back Up Later to be reminded tomorrow. Time Machine won't perform backups during this time.
It then gave me the choice of 'Back up Later' or 'Start New Backup'
I selected the latter and lost two years of Time Machine backups on each machine...
What are the implications of this? Does this have anything to do with our recent installation of Sierra?
Many thanks, Dave

The message you got is a indication that the verification check found that your backups (or at least one of them) is corrupt, and thus it needed to make a new backup to remove the corruption.

This is not a big deal unless there was something from the last two years you'd like to retrieve, but of course you've had until recently to do that and haven't needed to, so I assume everything you want to keep is still on your computer and now in your new backup. So it's a bit of a non-event, really.

Probably, yes.

It could also be Time Machine's way of telling you that the drive is having issues.
