Running El Capitan on an iMac, with lots of spare memory and hard drive space, I was getting intermittent slowdowns.
Tried all suggested solutions and ran MalwareBytes, which removed some items, but did not eliminate the spinning ball.
Then read that I should try EtreCheck, which I did, and it said to remove:
Adware: ⓘ
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.onlineapplicationnotice.AppNotice.plist
One adware file found. [Remove]
Since doing that, I have not experienced the spinning ball slowdown. I may have read that file was linked to iCloud, but since I do not use iCloud, I did not worry about that.
Maybe EtreCheck can help someone else with this problem in the future.
