Transition from iPhoto to Photos

My Albums in iPhoto are contained in hall-a-dozen or so separate Libraries. As I make the transition from iPhoto to Photos (one of these days I'll have to bite the bullet!) I would like to keep it that way. How do I ensure that my Albums will appear in separate Libraries in Photos, as before?

Thanks, Chas, but the article doesn't make it clear whether Aperture imports each Library separately, or consolidates all Libraries into one. I would like to keep them separate.

In that case, I'd suggest visiting Fat Cat Software (.com) to check out their excellent set of utilities. In this case (moving several iPhoto libraries into several Photos libraries), you'll want to see if PowerPhotos meets your needs.

PowerPhotos would likely do the trick, but I'm reluctant to pay the $30 for it. I'll just wait until Apple, in a future iteration of Photos, introduces this vary basic feature.

We'll wait to see what this fall holds for Photos, but I wouldn't recommend holding your breath on that. The ability to separate large photo libraries into smaller ones has been there for many years, but they've never included an easy way to transition multiple libraries into a new program before.

You can do it manually, of course, and without waiting: set iPhoto to a given library (that makes it the default one), then close iPhoto and open a new Photos library, then import that iPhoto library into it. Then repeat those steps for each library.
