We have an old Apple TV HD with the black remote. This serves us well and as yet have seen no reason to upgrade the unit. But yesterday I came across this article by Chas, on how to check the battery level on the remote:

It suddenly hit me that I have never given a thought to the battery in the remote. Such a tiny device must have a tiny battery and after years of use, that battery must be almost dead by now. So I followed this excellent article, checked the battery and it is at 63% - Amazing!
