Is anyone currently with freedom? I have concerns with their coverage. An added plus for me would be the free roaming while in the states. (I have used two of the “test drives - Verizon and visible.
Currently I have a plan with chatr $45/ month, 6gb data us/Canada calling. I Can switch to rogers, $45/month , 30gb, us/Canada calling. $50 for $40gb. Seems like a great option. I understand that freedom uses other towers, how is that?
Thanks for input. Seems like deals are changing rapidly.

My wife and I recently switched from Koodo to Freedom. Too early to tell how that will work out yet but we have a trip planned for the US and it will be a good chance to try it there. It seemed like a real advantage to have our same phone number whether in Canada or the US and to be able to make calls to US locations as well as Canadian locations if desired. And 40 GB of data won't hurt either. I thought we would have to commit to a 2 year contract to get this deal but it turns out it is month to month, so if it turns out to be a mistake, it is easier to jump to another plan. I don't expect that to happen though.

Freedom is using Rogers towers as part of the Shaw-Rogers deal until it can build its own towers out here in the west (now that Freedom is owned by Quebecor), which I believe means for the next 10 years. So you should have the same coverage on Freedom as you do on Rogers, albeit maybe at LTE speeds rather than full 5G, but that’s not really a concern IMO.

I was with Freedom for a year before I jumped to Shaw Mobile, and of course now I’ve moved over to Rogers directly. I had no significant complaints about Freedom service at the time, and the deal was really good (for the time).

Thank you Chas. Afew friends had mentioned a lot of dead spots with freedom. The US roaming was very appealing, I do take advantage of the “test drives” with the US #
As I was with chatr, I decided on rogers, 30 gb for $45. Got a free month, and I was able to transfer my balance ($4.75 over. Rogers wouldn’t go lower than $75 for Us/Canada call text and roaming.
Thank you

OK, we are just back from a road trip to California. I hoped to use my iPhone 11 for navigating with Apple Maps. We had a large number of locations in California we had to find in a short time so going with just paper maps was out of the question. My wife and I had been on Koodo for years but a week or so before the trip we went into the Freedom store at Uptown, paid for the 40 GB plan that "offered" Canada / US use and had our old phone numbers ported over. The week we were still in Victoria the Freedom plan worked properly but once we had crossed over on the Coho into Washington we had absolutely no cell use on either my iPhone 11 or my wife's iPhone 13. Without any chance for navigation we drove well off route to Olympia to find an AT&T store (which Freedom claimed to be using in the US). They had never heard of Freedom so my wife paid for an AT&T plan, got a new SIM card and we were navigating again using her iPhone. The first night of vacation was spent in the hotel using wifi to contact Freedom Support and after an hour or so of messaging back and forth, all sorts of setting suggestions and many full iPhone resets, the support person admitted they had no clue as to what was wrong and basically gave up. I then used the Verizon app to get their free Test Drive plan and for the rest of the trip we both had cell coverage. Once back in Victoria we returned to the Freedom store where the guy had no clue either. So we went back onto Koodo (at more expense) and I called Freedom to try to get some sort of compensation. Absolutely no sympathy from them! An expensive experiment.

Wow Dave, thanks for your message, sorry to hear of ur challenges. I was hesitant with freedom, sounded to good to be true!
I went to rogers, I had chatr, which was ok, but for $45 had 6gb. Rogers I got $45 and 30gb, they gave me a month free and carried over my $4.75 credit. Rogers does have a US /Canada roaming plan for $75 for Shaw internet customers, but if i went that route, the $45 plan would not be available. Thanks for being the ginny pig

Update: Freedom is officially now on Rogers' 5G towers, and offers US roaming with pretty much all of their plans -- as does Rogers.

There are a few dead spots around town (Royal Oak and East Sooke, I am looking at you), but on the whole Rogers (which I've used for my work phone for four years and am now on for my personal phone) seems to be the best I've tried (I've never used Telus, however).

Thanks for your reply Chas. It will be interesting for u to try free roaming when in the states. Others haven’t been so lucky.
