Desktop folders have disappeared

When I checked my computer this morning all the iCloud folders that had been on my desktop (on laptop and iMac) have disappeared. There is some pretty important stuff there and I am at a loss as to know where all the material has gone. All my business records are gone and it's going to take me hours to create them. When I check iCloud Drive, they are gone from there too.

Where did these folders go and how can I get them back.

Did you check the Trash? Are you signed in as the correct user? Are you certain those were actual folders and not aliases? Did you visit iCloud.com to see if the folders are there? If you do a spotlight search for any of the folders' names, what do you get?

If the folders aren't there, this should still be no problem at all to get back if you have been using Time Machine, and indeed this is exactly what it's for. While on the desktop, click on the Time Machine icon in the menubar, select "Enter Time Machine," and then roll back to day before yesterday and see if the folders are there. You can then click "restore" to put them back.

PS. Don't keep important files on the desktop!!
