disabling scrolling on Magic Mouse 2

El Capitan 10.11.6

Other than entering a command in Terminal, is there a way to disable inertial scrolling with my Magic Mouse 2.

And NO, there is not a checkbox to disable scrolling when I go into Accessibility. Only the option to make the scrolling slower or faster.

It is most annoying having pages jump up and down, or to the side, whenever I slightly touch the mouse.

There is also no Trackpad Option button, as described on some sites.

That's because you don't own a trackpad. The option appears only if one is present and connected.

I don't own a Magic Mouse, but I still have a Mighty Mouse around (I much prefer the Magic Trackpad). I put the batteries in the Mighty Mouse, went to Accessibility and found the option to turn off inertia without turning off scrolling entirely (see below for image).

It's quite possible that you won't see this, as I'm running macOS 10.12.3 (Sierra), and it is possible that what was a missing feature in El Capitan has since been restored. If it's there for the Mighty Mouse, I'm sure it would be there for the MM2, so my suggestion would be to upgrade.

If you can't upgrade due to equipment age, however, the terminal command is pretty straightforward. Here it is (just copy and paste the next line into the Terminal app and press return):

Code:
defaults write com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse MouseMomentumScroll -bool NO

Thanks, Charles.

I have the latest OS 10.11.6 and there is no Scrolling (with inertia) checkbox.

I entered defaults write com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse MouseMomentumScroll -bool NO in Terminal and pressed Return.

It made no difference, even after a Restart.

Did you click on the "Mouse options" button? That's how I got there.

If that doesn't work, then I guess it is time to upgrade to Sierra.

Your version of El Capitan doesn't look "right" at all. Are you running some kind of system appearance modifier?

Here's a screenshot from a friend running El Capitan. As you can see, yours looks completely different. I'm wondering if that is having an effect on your options.

Given that Sierra will fix the issue (and doesn't have any significant compatibility issues with anything that ran in El Capitan), plus has added features and security updates, why are you "not keen" on upgrading?
