DivX Installer

I am sure I used to see DivX in the bottom row of my System Preferences on my iMac, but there is no longer an icon there. Perhaps I had uninstalled it because it never seemed to get updated or it was removed in a system update.

Today I got a very unusual dialog box popping up on my desktop asking me to install an update to DivX. I have never see such an update method before.

Is this legitimate?

I notice I have a DivX folder in my Applications folder containing an uninstaller, documentation and preference, and I also have a Du=ivX Converter and DivX Player in Applications. But as far as I can tell, no DivX application is running and this invitation to upgrade did not come while in the application or via the Apple App Store.

The dialog box is particularly annoying as it can not be moved from the top right corner of my desktop and it covers other icons I would like to access.

I answered this on the listserv, but for the benefit of people here, this is the answer:

1. Is DivX Legitimate? Yes.

2. Do you need it? No.

3. Do they make it deliberately difficult to uninstall? Yes they do.

Thanks Chas,

This is an example of a message I never received on the listserv - one of the many benefits of following the forum.

I did get a response from the makers of DivX assuring me it was legitimate.

To your point about it being difficult to uninstall. I read other peoples posts on various discussion forums about this and the need to run their own uninstaller to get rid of all the stuff besides what lives in the Applications folder.

It still bothers me that they can just pop something onto my desktop like the invitation to update.
