I am not a writer or graphic designer, so my need for fancy fonts is VERY limited. But I thought I had a basic understanding...
Recently I was visiting a friend (also a VMUG member) who posed a question about the Wingdings fonts (and Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3) and I went home to investigate, and have found I need to learn a lot more. As a comparison I have been looking at the Bodini Ornaments font which my wife has occasion to use and hence the following comparison.
If I use Font Book and select the Bodini Ornaments font and then get the font info (View > Show Font Info), I see:
Note that it displays some of the typical symbols above the font info. And if I show a sample of the font (View > Sample), it looks like this:
Similarly if I am in an application like TextEdit and use the font selector (Format > Font > Show Fonts), I see the sample shown properly:
And when I type in TextEdit, I get what I expect:
Now I look at Wingdings in Font Book and get the font info:
Note how, unlike Bodini Ornaments, the info panel does not show the font examples above the font information. However pulling up the sample view looks very similar in format to what I saw with the Bodini Ornaments font:
But, if I am in an application like TextEdit and go to the font viewer, I do not see the symbols I expect. Instead just plain text:
And if I actually type away in TextEdit, again I get plain text rather than the desired symbols.
Hopefully someone can explain to me the huge gap in my knowledge on fonts.
