Mail Preferences_Rules_Edit

Refer to Vol 23, Issue 24 of Digest: I have set a number of Rules for incoming emails to be moved to selected Folders. There are a couple I now wish to Edit but opening that feature shows the Condition but the box for “Perform the following actions:” has been compressed to the thickness of a line so that it is not possible to see the action itself and make changes. Other than deleting the Rule and starting over, what option might there be?

Charles asked for a screenshot and have I "run any sort of ?eliminate unwanted languages? type software, or deleted fonts lately?" - NO

We have been away and the iMac was shut down. Having been through a couple of reboots, the Edit option appeared to be OK but as soon as I tested 4 or 5 existing Rules and selecting Edit, the Condition portion of Edit starts to compress. The screen shot included shows it to be about half gone but when I commented in the Digest, it was compressed completely so that it was not possible to make any Condition changes..

That screenshot certainly is helpful! What version of macOS are you running?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and see if the problem still exists?

Charles, I am using the latest - OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.6
Have not tried Safe Mode for the iMac (used it often in my PCs) and have not noticed that option when booting up. Would you mind telling me the process please.

Actually, the current macOS is Sierra (10.12), and is about to be replaced with High Sierra (10.13).

Safe mode is invoked by holding the shift key down during entire boot up process until the words “safe mode” appear on screen.

Let us know if the problem is still evident. Are you certain you have not installed any “anti-virus” or “cleaner” type programs?

Hi Charles. In the past, I have either received a update notification that an update is available or I have looked at "About this Mac" and the used "Software Update" to check to see if there is an applicable update. I have not updated the Camera RAW update as I do not use either of the cameras referred to and I do not use iMovie so have not bothered with that one. (See Screen Shot attached). I seem to recall seeing an update for Sierra and doing it but if I did, why would it not show up on the version indicated for About this Mac. Conversely, if I had not, why would it not show up as an Update to be done?

Second, I did recently install the Malware Bytes you suggested. The problem with the Mail Preferences_Rules started before that and it persisted after the Malware installation.

Third, I just ran the Safe Mode (my, that takes a long time to load) and I checked the Rules_Edit again. After going through about 5-6 Rules_Edit_OK, the Condition box started to compress again. (See Screen Shot attached).

Now back to normal mode. Is it time to call in the e-Guru guys?

Yes, it would be best if you sent that screenshot to Byte or Simply et al and ask if they’ve got an idea of what’s causing that. I’ve never seen it before.
