Messages starts up on MacBook wakeup

Whenever I wake up my 2008 MacBook running Mountain Lion the Messages app automatically starts up. If I quit it, it usually starts up once or twice more and after quitting Messages again it settles down and doesn't start up again. Messages is not among my 'Login Items' in the 'Users & Groups' System Preferences.

Going mental…

Right-click on the Messages icon and see if there is a check mark next to "open at login" under the options. Also, while the program is open, change your status to "offline" and see if that helps.

Status is already 'Offline' and 'Open at Login' is unchecked.

Messages starts up when I wake up the MacBook, not when I log in. Flummoxed…

Does it do this if you log into a guest account or a newly-created admin-level account?

No on the Guest Account and no on the newly-created admin-level account.

Have a look in System Preferences, Users and Groups, (your account if not already highlighted), Login Items and see if anything to do with Messages is there.
